Chlorine is an enemy of the components of your toilet, as it is wasting component materials (such as valves, flappers, gaskets, etc.).
We recommend not to use chlorine tablets in the toilet tank to avoid damages.
What products are exposed to chlorine damage?
It is recommended that if a component has any wear or deformation, to change the piece, to avoid leakage.
Considers that drinking water also contains chlorine, so over time (and even if you do not use chlorine tablets), the components will deteriorate and you will need to replace them.
Tartar is an accumulation of calcium and other minerals that form on surfaces in frequent contact with water.
It may appear harmless, as it appears as a white spot; The problem arises when it begins to accumulate and become rigid (what we know as deposits of tartar) because it causes obstructions that generate leakage or malfunction.
What products are exposed to tartar?
To eliminate tartar in the fill valves sometimes it works to shake it slightly; If this is not enough you should remove it by soaking the valve for a while in a container with vinegar and then reinstall it.
In the case of the flappers, you can easily remove it, clean it (if the necessary soak in vinegar) and install it again.
In flush valves:
Oxidation occurs when a piece of metal comes into contact with water; Has a reddish hue and gradually begins to corrode metal, affecting the functionality.
Normally, toilet fittings are made of stainless or plastic materials so this does not happen, but there are still products on the market that are not, so it is important that before you buy them, you check well the material.
Which products are exposed to oxidation?
Our recommendation is that when a part is rusted, you replace it immediately to avoid problems.
Check the materials with which the product was manufactured to avoid leakage.
Some examples:
1. Underneath your toilet, there is a seal that connects the bowl to the drain tube. Formerly for this union was used the wax neck. However, due to its material, it degrades over time, which causes leaks and bad odors.
Wax is extremely sensitive to changes in temperature, can become hard during the cold and melt with heat. In addition, it degrades more easily as it attracts cockroaches and other insects that feed on it. Our recommendation for these cases is to choose a complete solution. To know more about these stamps we recommend Coflex's Flexible Flanges or Flexible Toilet Seats, and if you want more information we recommend reading the article Do you need to install a Toilet?
2. Low quality plastics degrade rapidly, so the flapper and valves will allow leakage into the bowl.
Last but not least, poor installation of your toilet fittings can lead to leaks, so we recommend that you read the installation instructions completely (in detail) or ask an expert (Look for a Coflex Plumber!).
