Key signs of a toilet failure

Outdoor Leaks

Symptoms

  • The plaster or cement that fixes de toilet in the floor has yellow spots
  • The silicone that attaches the toilet to the floor is broken or about to break
  • When discharging, water is filtered under the toilet
  • Screws that attach to the floor are rusted or broken

These symptoms indicate that there is a leak under your toilet, so check the seal between the toilet bowl and drain tube.

If the seal is not being created due to poor installation; if the screws are rusted and broken; Or, if the wax has been degraded, it is time to change the solution.

Symptoms

  • When discharging, water is filtered between the tank and the bowl
  • Water is constantly filtered between tank and bowl

These symptoms indicate that there is a leak between the tank and the bowl.

As we previously discuss (What affects your toilet?), the tank/bowl packaging may have been affected by chlorine, which does not seal properly.

If at the time of discharge, water is filtered between tank and bowl, the packing has stopped performing its function and it is time to replace it.

On the other hand, if water constantly flows between tank and bowl, check that screws are properly tightened (no too tight to avoid damaging the ceramic) and do not show oxidation. If there s any kind of oxidation it is best to change them.

Symptom

  • The water comes out of the crank or handle

This symptom indicates that the overflow tube is higher than the handle hole, so you will have to cut it below the height of the handle.

Also, the intake valve may not be cutting, due to impurities between the gasket and the base.

Symptom

  • Water splashes to tank lid

This symptom indicates that there is leakage due to damage to the fill valve.

If the fill or inlet valve is damaged, it spills to the cap when filling and can drain water from the tank.

This is not very common, but it can happen with rod and float valves. The recommended thing in these cases is to change the valve.

Interior Leaks

Symptom

  • The water seal of the toilet bowl is constantly moving
  • The intake valve is constantly activated without a discharge
  • The water level of the toilet tank is low

These symptoms indicate that there is a leak in the tank fittings.

One reason may be that the discharge valve or seal (gasket) is damaged or degraded by chlorine or some other reason, failing to perform its function. What is recommended in these cases is to change these fittings to eliminate leakage.

Another reason is that tartar has accumulated in the discharge valve, the intake valve or in the same seal, preventing its proper operation. It is necessary to remove the scale so that it works again (for more information on how to remove it, we recommend reading the article What affects your toilet?).

One more reason may be that the fill valve does not cut or is incorrectly adjusted. In this case, you need to adjust the filling or intake valve level, or if the problem persists, change it.

If you have a float, it can rub against the inner walls of the toilet tank, the water hose of the water mirror or some other element. In this case, you must adjust the intake valve for the float to move freely.

Failures

Symptom

  • The intake or fill valve does not supply water

If it does not supply water, it is likely that the valve is covered with impurities in the water network or with tartar. To remedy this fault we recommend removing the flexible connector and cleaning the valve by removing the filter from the fill valve.

Symptom

  • The water in the cup has a black color

This failure is not common, but if this is the case it is because the discharge valve packaging has been degraded by chlorine or other chemicals. In this case, you will need to change the whole piece.

Symptom

  • The toilet does not do the complete discharge

This can happen for three reasons:

  1. The water level in the tank is not sufficient, so you must adjust the intake valve to accumulate or fill with more water.
  2. The level of the water seal (bowl) is not enough. In this case, make sure that the intake valve hose is in the overflow tube. If fitted, adjust the valve to the filling hose.
  3. The  holes in the cup are covered with tartar. If this is the reason, it is very difficult to clean it, so we recommend changing the toilet.

Symptoms

  • The linking chain of the handle with the discharge seal is broken
  • The handle or some other component is broken
  • The discharge button cable is rusted or broken

This can be due to the use or poor quality in the materials. In this case it is necessary to change the part.
